- It links all the settlements of the western end of the island with Freeport and all the eastern settlements. In fact, it’s the only road that links these areas.
- During hurricanes, storm surges and very heavy rains a large portion of this road floods so severely that it’s impassible by car.
- As you can see in the pictures, this is where fishermen come to dump their empty conch (pronounced konk) shells after the animal is taken out. Conch is a large shellfish and a staple of Bahamian food. The empty shells cannot be discarded where conch live as they will move out of any area with dead shells.
- The water on either side of Fishing Hole Road is seawater that connects the Atlantic Ocean on two sides of the island.
- These bay areas contain mangroves which are crucial to protecting the shorelines and also breeding grounds for many types of marine life.
